Buying a Hoverboard for Your Kids

Posted by

For parents thinking about a Christmas present for their kids this year, they can consider buying a child-friendly hoverboard for them. It is, without a doubt, one of the best gifts they could receive, and you can certainly see that the advantages outweigh the cost.

Beyond being a source of entertainment, it can also be a viable mode of transportation. For example, if your kids only need to travel short distances to school, you might find that a hoverboard is a great Christmas present option other than walking or even biking. They can also enjoy a bit more freedom with their own personal “mode of transport.”

Another huge advantage of getting a hoverboard is to get kids out and away from their phones or laptops. Unfortunately, kids nowadays do not like to spend time close to nature. But by giving them a hoverboard, you are essentially promoting being outside and having fun.

If you are looking for the right hoverboard for your kids, here are some pointers you have to watch out for.

1. Think About Their Age and Weight

If you have older kids, then this is not so much of an issue. They will be able to use most adult-sized hoverboards without any problem. However, younger ones are another matter altogether.

First of all, you have to observe if your child is capable of balancing and steering on the board. Of course, if they are still a bit on the young side, it still won’t be so bad to buy one as they can slowly start practicing and learning how to operate it with your supervision, of course. Just make sure they also have the safety gear as well.

In terms of weight, you normally would not have to worry about the maximum weight limit of the models, but you want something that can handle lighter loads. You just need to be sure to check the weight limit and that they are already big enough for the board. In general, those with 10-inch tires require at least 40 lbs, while the 6.5 and 8.5-inch models need only 30 lbs.

2. Think About Safety

Kids will most certainly want to go on the hoverboard more often than adults, so it makes more sense to buy models that are certified as safe. You might also want to choose ones that are more heavy-duty and have bumpers to protect the board in case of an accident.
Another safety feature to look out for is different learning modes. Kids may not be as quick in learning how to ride (or may be the opposite) but having the option for a beginner mode is a huge plus. You may also control how fast they go.

3. Think About Usage

You will need to choose the size of the hoverboard, and this will be based on your personal preference and usage. If you want something for the whole family, then the bigger models make more sense. For smaller kids, however, you might feel better buying a smaller, 6.5-inch one.

A hoverboard is a great gift for kids that might also turn out to be something for the family to enjoy, especially if you are so impressed that you buy one for yourself. You may simply share one hoverboard, but then only one person can ride on it at a time. On the other hand, having a couple will allow you to go at the same time or even race against each other.
